NICOLE WINS LASER OPEN AT MERDEKA DAY OPEN REGATTA

 

KOTA KINABALU:  The KFC-18th Merdeka Day Open Regatta 2011 came to close on Sunday after three days of intense competition.  16 teams and 150 sailors from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea took part in the event which was jointly organised by Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) and Sabah Sailing Association. 

 

Nicole Chan Mei Yii from KYC was the winner in the Laser 4.7 Open category by beating her male competitor and fellow club mate Luthais Tseu and third place Sheikh Abdul Samad Bin Saidi from TESA Terengganu. 

 

Nicole also took the Laser 4.7 Girl class title with Kuala Lumpur's Wan Amirah Asyikin Bt Ahmad Fuzli in second while third place went to Tawau's Khoo Khungli.  In the boys Laser 4.7 class, Sheikh Abdul Samad clinched the title after a countback with Luthais settling for second spot.  The third place winner was Tengku Mohd Muslim Bin Tuan Hassan from Terengganu.

 

The Laser Redial Open title won by Mohamad Nazlin Muis Bin Mohd Asri from Kuala Lumpur while second and third place went to Indonesians Cerina Nenggola Putri and Anang Setya Budi.  Nazlin and Cerina also won the boys and girls class in the same event with Anang Setya Budi, Muhd Dhiaurrahman Bin Rozaini and Needa Lim, Vedhavalli Grant occupying the second and third place in the boys and girls class respectively.

 

In the Optimist Overall, Negeri Sembilan Muhd Amirul Izham Bin Hamdan came top followed by Brandon Sung and Brian Chow Zheng Han, both from KYC. 

 

Selangor Mohd Akiyuddin Bin Mat Zaki won the Laser Standard while Muhd Farhan Bin Kamardin from Johor came second with third going to Abdul Aziz Bin Sarip from Negeri Sembilan.

 

According to KYC Commodore Louis Tseu, he was pleased with the big turnout and said the Club are serious in the development of the sport as witnessed by their Coach Hj Ahmad Yusof Bin Said being recognised by the Sports Ministry at the recent Sports Award ceremony.  He also disclosed that their Junior Programme which has just been initiated had attracted a very encouraging 49 participants so far.  He also said that the preparation of the athletes for next year's SUKMA in Pahang has already begun.  He also thanked all the sponsors for their support in staging of the competition.

 

Meanwhile, State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Yang Berhormat Datuk Masidi Manjun in his speech read by his Assistant Yang Berhormat Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin praised the organiser for making the regatta a bigger event in tune with the 54th year celebration of Merdeka Day as well as their effort in continuing to promote the sports especially among the youth.  He said sailing is a friendly green sport event and is particularly excellent in promoting character development among the youth and should be encouraged by all.  He hopes more sponsors will come forward to support the event, as it is the only Malaysia National Ranking Regatta in Sabah.

OVER 150 SAILORS PARTICIPATE IN REGATTA

 

KOTA KINABALU:  The KFC-18th Merdeka Day Open Regatta 2011 ended successfully over the weekend. Held at the seafront of the Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) in Tanjung Aru, the three-day regatta attracted over 150 sailors representing 16 teams from as far as South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore as well as from within the nation.  For the record, the regatta was jointly organised by Kinabalu Yacht Club and the Sabah Sailing Association.

 

Nicole Chan Mei Yii representing KYC bagged a double after returning home with the Laser 4.7 Open Category crown as well as in the Girls' Class.  In the Open Category, she edged male teanmate Luthais Tseu, who settled for second while Sheikh Abdul Samad Bin Saidi from TESA Terengganu, claimed the third spot.  Nicole won the Girls' Class title by defeating Kuala Lumpur's Wan Amirah Asyikin Bt Ahmad Fuzli, while third place went to Tawau's Khoo Khungli.  In the boys' Laser 4.7 class, Sheikh Abdul Samad clinched the title on countback over Luthais Tseu, who eventually settled for second spot.  The third place winner was Tengku Mohd Muslim Bin Tuan Hassan from Terengganu.

 

The Laser Radial Open title was won by Mohamad Nazlin Muis Bin Mohd Asri from Kuala Lumpur with second and third place go to Indonesias Cerina Nenggola Putri and Anang Setya Budi respectively.  Nazlin and Cerina also won the Boys' and Girls' Class in the same event with Anang Setya Budi, Muhd Dhaiaurrahman Bin Rozaini and Needa Lim, Vedhavalli Grant occupying the second and third place in the boys' and girls' class respectively.

Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, the Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, who graced the Closing Ceremony and gave away the prizes to the winners urged all relevant parties to continue to popularise the sport, especially among youth.  He said by doing so, it will greatly assist the government's effort in promoting tourism through sporting activities such as sailing.  "It is a friendly green sport which is particularly excellent in promoting character development and should be encouraged by all.  "I'm happy to see many young people from Malaysia and neigbouring countries turning up.  I also understand that this is a National Ranking Regatta for sailors in Malaysia and that shows this regatta is of high standard," said Ellron.

 

On the other hand, KYC Commodore Louis Tseu was also pleased with the big turnout and said that the Club is serious in the development of the sport.  He also revealed that they have started a youth programme which has attracted 49 young sailors in preparation for next year's SUKMA in Pahang.
